Dr. Nancy Kadel, orthopedic surgeon and dance medicine specialist, recommends that dancers do 24 relevés on each foot daily for injury prevention.

As a former dancer, dance teacher and dance researcher, Dr. Nancy Kadel is in a unique position to integrate arts and medicine. Dr. Kadel is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in foot and ankle reconstruction and the care and treatment of dancers. She is a graduate of the University of Washington School of Medicine and the Harvard Orthopaedics Combined Residency Program. In addition, Kadel received fellowship training in foot and ankle surgery from Boston Foot and Ankle Center at New England Baptist Hospital. Kadel is formerly Associate Professor of Orthopedics at the University of Washington and the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), she was the medical director of the Healthy Dancers’ Clinic, a free injury prevention/screening clinic at the ODC Dance Commons in San Francisco for three years. Dr. Kadel has published articles and presented lectures internationally about dance injury prevention. She has served on the Board of Directors of the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science (IADMS), and served as President of the Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA). She is an associate editor for the Journal of Dance Medicine and Science (JDMS) and serves as the co-chair of the Dance/USA Task Force on Dancer Health.
