Hilary Cartwright, former soloist with The Royal Ballet, co-founder of White Cloud Studio and founder of Yoga for Dancers, discusses the very important difference between jumping up & jumping down.

A native of southern England, Hilary Cartwright performed as a soloist with The Royal Ballet and went on to serve as ballet mistress and répétiteur for the company. After leaving The Royal Ballet, Ms. Cartwright held positions as the Associate Director of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and Director of the Netherlands Dans Theatre II.   In 1982, she co-founded White Cloud Studios in New York along with Juliu Horvath, teaching both GYROTONIC® and yoga. Ms. Cartwright has taught ballet all over the world and taught for 15 years at American Ballet Theatre’s Summer Intensive. Ms. Cartwright is the founder of Yoga for Dancers. Yoga for Dancers is an intensive retreat course, which she started in Italy the summer of 2006; it is housed in a picturesque villa outside Florence and continues annually. Yoga for Dancers has expanded to include retreats in Puerto Rico, Los Angeles, Seattle, London, Bath England, Morocco and Costa Rica. Along with Yoga for Dancers, Ms. Cartwright teaches ballet and Gyrotonics around the globe, and trains private students and teachers at Fluid Fitness in Manhattan. She is a regular guest teacher at the Juilliard school as well as coaches and sets ballets from the Ashton Repertoire. Ms. Cartwright has published several articles in Dance Magazine including an educational series in ‘The Dancing Times’ England and for the Royal Academy. She has also published a book, ‘Dancing For A Living’.
